48 – Zombieland

Oh, America. I wish I could tell you that this was still America, but I’ve come to realize that you can’t have a country without people. And there are no people here. No, my friends. This is now the United States of Zombieland.

Zombieland released in 2009, was a welcome addition to the apocalyptic genre, after the success of the UK Shaun of the Dead we had the zombie comedy. Zombie films always had a tradition of humour, Shaun of the Dead took this a step further ,and Zombieland went another step, this dealt with a lot of the motifs we will come to discuss in the movies on this blog. The film itself actually references the rules of surviving in this apocalyptic world, Zombieland. These are quoted from the start of the film as rules of survival, self referencing other zombie films, and the deaths in them.

I watched this with someone, and this was their first ever zombie film, and stated “this is utter nonsense” it didn’t win them over then, however the statement was true, and its meant to be utter nonsense, everything in the film is tongue firmly in cheek, down to one of THE BEST movie cameos of all time, and no I know I said there would be spoilers, but I will certainly not spoil that one.

There are so many apocalyptic motifs through the film that I would only be quoting the whole film here, however the obvious one is the shop scene when they not only take what they want but also trash the store, in apocalyptic worlds there are no consequences, this is a trademark of these films. The band of survivors, that become a team, and probably would never have been together but for this apocalypse.

Zombieland’s moral is that it’s the small things in life that make it worthwhile, so for instance we have Tallahassee’s constant search for a Twinkie, I loved this idea, it is the small things that gets us through every day, why would it be any different post the apocalypse, for me it would be creme eggs!!

Zombieland is a comedy, made to show the human belief that the world could end, is almost ridiculous. All the main components of the human way of life are still going to be instilled, such as the desire to survive, human emotions like love, and the joy of laughing. All of these chunks of the human spirit will allow the human race to go on long after a zombie apocalypse.

Wichita: [playing Monopoly] Ooh! Free parking…

Little Rock: Yeah.
Wichita: which coincidentally is the best thing about Zombieland.
Columbus: You want to know the best thing about Z-land? No no Facebook status updates. You know, Rob Curtis is gearing up for Friday. Who cares?
Tallahassee: The best thing is no more flushing. Epic.

Zombieland is a very welcome addition to this genre and I highly recommend this to pass another couple of hours until the real apocalypse happens
